‘Stockings for veterans’ holiday drive has begun to benefit West Haven hospital

NEW HAVEN >> This holiday season you can help say “thank you” to veterans by donating items for the 9th Annual Stockings For Soldiers Drive, through which stockings will be delivered to the Veterans Affairs medical center in West Haven, according to a release from organizers.

The drive is in partnership with St. Bernadette’s School and John C Daniels school, the release said. Organizers and others will deliver the stockings to the medical center and the St. Bernadette students will sing Christmas carols, the release said.

Donations will be accepted through Dec. 8. Donors who are giving pre-stuffed stockings are asked to label whether the items are intended for a female veteran. Hanukkah stockings are also welcome.

Suggested items to donate, as they must fit into stockings: DVD Movies, CDs, paperback books, books on CD for visually impaired veterans, magazines, body and hand lotions, soap and body wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream and razors, snack size crackers and cookies individually, wrapped snacks and candy (sugar free /diabetic approved), hard candy (sugar free/diabetic approved), hot cocoa, chewing gum, puzzle books, decks of cards, pens/stationary, tooth paste, dental floss , tooth brushes, mouth wash, baby powder,hair brushes/combs, barrettes/ hair clips, nice hair bands, gloves, nail polish, toe nail clippers, nail files, tweezers, lip balm, lip gloss, mascara, eye shadow, small boxes of teas, scarves knit hats.

Money donations will be used to buy stockings and items for the stockings, organizers said.

Organizers hope to deliver at least 200 stockings.
