St. Mary Twinning Committee holds Haiti fundraiser
The St. Mary Parish Twinning Committee is set to send its Medical Mission Team to Marbial Haiti on Feb. 27. This is the sixth time the group will travel to its sister parish, Ste. Therese, in Marbial, Haiti to provide a clinic and perform surgeries.
Local favorites, The Rumrunners, are supporting the mission by headlining the Hearts for Haiti Valentine's Dance on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Notre Dame High School auditorium in West Haven. All proceeds will benefit the Twinning Committee’s mission. Tickets are a $25 each — BYOB&S(nacks) with music, mixers and coffee provided. Tables of 10 can be reserved with full payment of $250 in advance. Tickets are available by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling the rectory at 203-878-3571.
Approximately 11 doctors and medical professionals will support the Medical Mission. Medical Mission team members will spend the week at Ste. Therese in Marbial providing immunizations, surgeries and a medical clinic to the parishioners of Ste. Therese.
Marbial is a sprawling, remote parish in southern Haiti about 15 miles from the city of Jacmel. The 15-mile trip from Jacmel to Marbial can take over an hour as an SUV works its way slowly up a riverbed that is only accessible in the late winter dry season.
"We are especially grateful to our Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council at St. Mary for supporting the 2016 Medical Mission by providing for the medical team members’ airfare," said Doctor Richard J. Garvey, senior attending general surgeon at Bridgeport Hospital, and medical director for the mission.
"About 75% of the cost of the mission is associated with charges for a surgical facility in the city of Jacmel,” Garvey said. “The remainder of the costs are travel and room and board for the medical team members while in Haiti.”
