Singing chef helps out at literacy center wine tasting
Connecticut’s singing celebrity chef, Neil Fuentes, will be at The Literacy Center of Milford’s 18th Annual Wine and Food Tasting Friday, Oct. 12.
The benefit, which includes wine tasting and specialty appetizers prepared by the center’s tutors, students, local restaurants, and Fuentes, will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Westwoods Ballroom (Italian American Club) at 85 Chase Lane in West Haven.
Fuentes, who was born in Venezuela and is known statewide for his food-inspired performances on his Sabra Recipe Makeover cooking show and guest appearances on WTNH-8’s Connecticut Style, will create a Latin-Caribbean appetizer, known as Mushroom Ceviche (pronounced Suh vee’ chey), at the event.
In addition, professional dancers from The New England Ballet will give a special performance, followed by live and silent auctions and raffles, which include famous rock star paraphernalia.
Also, the Devon Rotary and Milford Rotary will be honored for their support and dedication to the mission of The Literacy Center.
Wine and beer tasting, and selected cordials are courtesy of On The Rocks Spirit Shop and other local distributors. The event is sponsored by The Milford Bank and many businesses and individuals.
Attendees also will have the opportunity to meet and greet the center’s students: Those studying for citizenship; those in need of mastering basic reading, writing, mathematics and science skills, and those from other countries who want to learn or improve their knowledge of the English language.
“Our mission is all about empowerment,” said Executive Director Tami Jackson. “Our door at 16 Dixon Street is wide open to anyone who wants to learn the basic skills necessary for realizing a better life for themselves and their families. This past year, we’ve proudly enrolled 102 adult students who are improving their lives daily as a result of our tutoring services made possible by our generous donors.”
Jackson points to the center’s free-of-charge, one-on-one tutoring program for beginner, intermediate and advanced classes, which focuses on computer skills, essay writing and citizenship. Further, its Literacy for Children program strives to improve the literacy of young children through providing books for babies and toddlers, and sponsoring a preschooler story hour, which is held weekly at the Milford Public Library on Mondays at 10 a.m.
Tickets are $40 for the wine tasting, and are on sale now. Space is limited.
