Rich Smith was elected chairman of the police commission at the commission’s January meeting.

Former Chairman Alberta Jagoe (D) began the January meeting by thanking the board for its support over the last few years. She said change is good and that it was time for her to step aside as chairman.

She recommended Smith, saying he would be an asset and advocate for the police department.

Commissioner Sam Bergami seconded the motion to nominate Smith, and a vote carried unanimously.

Bergami, a Republican, was then reelected as vice chairman of the commission.

Smith began serving on the police commission in 2012, filling the unexpired term of Anthony Candido. Some Republicans at the time objected because Smith is also chairman of the Democratic Town Committee.

Smith at the time responded that the police commission is not a partisan commission, and that he believed he could do a good job as a commissioner.
