After a long discussion Monday night, an attempt to open the city charter to make revisions failed.
A supermajority vote of the Board of Aldermen was needed to begin charter revision. The Democrats, who number nine on the board and who supported charter revision, needed one of the Republicans on the board to vote with them in order for the process to begin.
Republicans, saying they had several concerns, including the possibility of losing minority representation on the board, all voted against it.
Several Democrats promised they would not support eliminating minority representation. But the Republicans were not swayed. Several said they still had questions and concerns about the process.
The vote to begin charter revision was 9-6 along party lines. But with the supermajority requirement, the vote failed.
