SOUTHBURY — A Milford man who was killed after he was hit by two vehicles while walking on Interstate 84 east Wednesday night was wanted by law enforcement in Newington for an alleged stabbing, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police identified the victim Thursday as 52-year-old Ricky L. Izzard, who had a P.O. box in Milford. A home address was not provided for him.

Around 11:30 p.m., a 27-year-old Waterbury man was driving in the right of two lanes on I-84 east near the Exit 15 on and off ramps with a second vehicle, driven by 51-year-old Waterbury man, in the left lane behind the first vehicle, state police said.

A pedestrian, later identified as Izzard, standing on the right shoulder started crossing the travel lanes, walking north, and was hit by both vehicles, state police said. Izzard was seriously hurt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 51-year-old driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury for minor injuries, state police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

But before Izzard was fatally hit on the highway in Southbury, authorities in Newington say he was the alleged suspect of a serious stabbing in the Bradford Commons parking lot Wednesday night.

Police said patrol officers responded to the parking lot at 1538 Williard Ave. around 9 p.m. for a report of a person stabbed and found a female victim with multiple serious stab wounds. Officers performed life-saving measures and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police did not provide any further details on her condition.

Authorities in Newington said investigators quickly identified a suspect who was “later determined to be involved in a pedestrian motor vehicle crash on I-84 in Southbury ... where he sustained fatal injuries.”

Anyone who witnessed the Southbury crash is asked to call police at 203-267-2200.
