Organic gardening talk kicks off River Street Wednesdays this week

A talk about organic gardening will kick off the first River Street Wednesdays series this week on May 27.
Linda Ball will lead the program. She has been the supervisor of the Benson-Crump Memorial Community Gardens for the past 25 years. She has assisted many towns in Connecticut including Shelton and West Haven with their attempt to gather information about community gardens as well as develop one within their town.
Ball oversees the organic gardening program at Eisenhower Park, which has been a practicing organic garden for the past 20 years.
Currently, the Benson-Crump Program is in its 47th year of operation, which, according to the Connecticut Community Gardening Association, is the oldest community gardens in this part of Connecticut.
At the first River Street Wednesday Ball will talk about what it means to garden organically, how to get started and the benefits for oneself and family.
The City of Milford and Milford Arts Council are organizing River Street Wednesdays, which will be held each Wednesday at noon on the parkette in front of City Hall from May 27 to Aug. 26.
“River Street Wednesdays provides the community an opportunity to connect for a rousing mid-day downtown.  We encourage everyone to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy downtown Milford and everything it has to offer,” said Mayor Blake.
“The events are eclectic and entertaining, meant to highlight many of the activities and beauty of Milford, as well as create a community place in the heart of our city,” said Paige Miglio, executive director of the Milford Arts Council.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair as well as a picnic lunch.  The downtown area has a number of restaurants where a bag lunch can be purchased, organizers said. Visit the Downtown Milford Business Association at for a list of restaurants and shops.
