Orange should not consider 4000K blue spectrum lights
I’m writing this to share some information about United Illuminating’s program to implement LED streetlights throughout its service area. In short, UI plans to put in 4000K blue spectrum LED bulbs, which are increasingly viewed as unsafe for public health and public safety, and that are perceived as cold, over bright and unpleasant from a quality of life perspective.
The AMA released a report recommending against high-temp bulbs, and the trend across the country has been away from 4K implementation.
AMA guidelines state that LED lighting emits a large amount of blue light that appears white to the naked eye and create worse nighttime glare than conventional lighting. Discomfort and disability from intense, blue-rich LED lighting can decrease visual acuity and safety, resulting in concerns and creating a road hazard.”
The AMA has several other criticisms about outdoor LED lighting. Considering we have many seniors in town, maybe this can be a discussion before UI continues this implementation. CL&P/Eversource are now doing 3,000K across the board.
I think the town of Orange should consider “warm-spectrum 2700-3000K bulbs” and not blue spectrum 4000+K bulbs.
