New ice cream shop opens on New Haven Avenue in Woodmont

Shawn Nugent and his fiancé, Jody Morales, are ready to help residents cool off this summer with ice cream from their Savin Rock Creamery across from the beach at 1617 New Haven Avenue, just over the West Haven line in Woodmont.

The shop is a full service ice cream shop with outdoor seating, and it is the couple’s second store. The original has been in business at 225 Captain Thomas Boulevard in West Haven for 13 years.

“We are a seasonal business, and our normal months, depending on the  weather, are from April until October, and the hours are Monday to Sunday from 12 until 9 p.m.,” Nugent said. “Last year would have been our first year in business at this address. However the combined construction of gas and sewer lines  on one side and bridge repair on the other completely shut us down. So technically, this will be our first full season.”

The new shop sells banana splits, brownie sundaes, milk shakes, malts, sundaes (hot fudge, caramel, pineapple, peanut butter and strawberry) and root beer floats. It features Giffords of Maine premium hard serve ice cream, and the couple said they plan to offer soft serve in the near future.

“The Maine influence can be seen in some of  the flavors such as Caramel Caribou  — toffee ice cream with caramel swirls and mini caramel filled chocolate cups — and Moose Tracks — vanilla ice cream swirled with fudge and mini peanut butter cups,” Nugent said. “We also carry two flavors of sugar free and  all the favorites —  pistachio, toasted coconut, chocolate chip, black raspberry, smores, butter pecan, maple walnut, peanut butter cup, peanut butter pie, cookies and crème and mint chip, among many others, including award winning vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.”

For people wanting a cool treat, minus the dairy, the shop also sells Libbys Italian Ice made on Wooster Street in New Haven.
