New Jersey man dies in canoe accident in Milford on Saturday
Tragedy struck Milford waters Saturday, claiming the life of a 24-year-old New Jersey man, who died in a canoe accident in Long Island Sound.
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection announced that Jeffrey Young, 24, of North Caldwell, New Jersey, died at Milford Hospital after falling out of a canoe in Long Island Sound in Milford.
On Saturday afternoon, Connecticut's Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police responded with Milford Police and Fire Department and the US Coast Guard to a report of an overturned canoe with two people on board.
Young and a female were taken to Milford Hospital. The female was treated for hypothermia and released. Young died at the hospital.
Local officials said they received a call at 2:11 p.m. Saturday about two people in distress from an overturned canoe between Silver Sands State Park and Charles Island.
The city’s Marine 2 responded with three personnel and located one person near the canoe and brought the person back to Milford harbor, for transport to Milford Hospital for evaluation of any injuries.
Stratford Fire Department’s marine unit and the US Coast Guard also responded to the area, including a Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod. The Coast Guard vessel located the second person, Young, east of Charles Island without a pulse and started immediate CPR as they transported him to Milford Harbor.
EnCon police are investigating the accident.
The Milford Fire Department stressed the importance of wearing personal floatation devices and proper clothing for thermal protection when out on the water at this time of year.
“Water temperatures are only in the upper 40s and lower 50s, which makes survivability from emersion far less due to the effects of hypothermia,” said Fire Department Spokesman Greg Carman.
