A New Jersey man was killed when he was hit by a car and knocked from the Moses Wheeler Bridge Saturday night after stopping to change a flat tire.
State police said Emmanuel Felix, 38, of Maplewood, N.J., was in a 2006 Cadillac Escalade with five others, including a baby who was not injured, when the car got a flat tire.
It was about 10:30 p.m. and the car was traveling on I-95 in the southbound lane, south of Exit 34.
The car stopped in the right lane of three travel lanes on the bridge, and then a second car, which appears to have had relatives of people in the Cadillac, pulled up to offer assistance. The people in the second car activated emergency flashers and set up notification triangles behind their car.
A third vehicle, a 2002 Honda Accord, was approaching the scene, also in the right travel lane, and it struck the emergency notification triangles and then took evasive action, changing lanes left, into the center lane, according to a police report.
Then the driver lost control of the Honda and moved back into the right lane, striking two people who had gotten out of the Cadillac.
Felix was thrown from the travel portion of the roadway, suffering fatal injuries. An NBC report says he fell 100 feet from the bridge and into the river below.
Another person outside the car was taken by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital, suffering serious injuries.
Two other people in the Cadillac were also taken by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital for minor injuries.
The driver of the Honda, who struck the pedestrians, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
No enforcement action was taken, and the accident is still under investigation, police said.
