The residents of 13 Fern Street are without a home tonight after a fire ravaged their house.

Firefighters said the occupants didn’t know there was a fire blazing from their basement until neighbors alerted them.

The fire was called in to 911 by neighbors at 11:56 a.m. The first arriving Fire Department units helped the occupants outside of the house to a safe location, where they were evaluated by Milford Fire Paramedics.

Fire crews found heavy fire in the basement of the structure that was extending throughout the home, said Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi.

Crews from Car 4, Engine 1, Tower 1, Medic 1, Quint 3, Engine 4, Engine 6, Engine 7 and Medic 2 fought the blaze. Fern Street is located in the Walnut Beach area, off of Harrison Avenue.

No injuries were reported to the occupants or firefighters. Two turtles were removed from the building by firefighters but one cat is still missing, Fabrizi said.

“The residence is untenable after suffering severe fire, smoke, and water damage. The Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the occupants,” Fabrizi said.

Mutual aid units from Stratford and West Haven fire departments covered the City of Milford during the blaze.

The Milford Fire Marshal’s Division is investigating, and a cause has yet to be determined.
