Modular closings, big move, CAPT testing, dramarama night and more - Amity Backpack

It's February and still only a dusting of snow. My husband, who shovels the walkways is thrilled, but skiers, snowplowers and students who love "snow day" cancellations can barely hide their disappointment.

February is the month for Valentine's Day, honoring former presidents and the school winter vacation. However, this year, February will mark the beginning of the move into the newly built and newly renovated portions of the high school, as well.

The newly revised schedule for the closing of the modular classrooms and movement of the Grade 9 students and administrative offices is included at the end of this column.

Parents and students are advised to make note of these revisions to the schedule. However, before we get to the revised schedule for the move, let's take note of other events and important dates for February.

Parent report card conferences will take place on Feb.1 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., which is an earlier scheduled start time than in the past. Auditions for the Solo and Ensemble Concert will also take place on Feb. 1.

Auditions will be held from 2:20 to 4 p.m.. The Solo and Ensemble Voice and Instrument Concert will be performed in the Choir Room at 7 p.m. on Feb. 8. The snow date is Tuesday, Feb. 13.

An Advanced Placement Information Session for parents of Grade 10 and Grade 11students will be held on Tues., Feb. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Senior High School Cafeteria. Parents attending this session will receive information about the expanded course offerings at Amity.

Induction ceremonies for the Spanish, French and Latin Honor Societies will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Cafeteria.

The PTSA will not have a monthly meeting in February. A joint meeting with the middle school PTSO organizations will take place in the senior high school cafeteria on March 7. More information regarding this joint meeting will appear in next month's column.

"Dramarama Night" a cabaret style program of drama performances will take place on, Thursday Feb. 15. The performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Cafeteria.

School will be closed for the observance of Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 19, and will remain closed on Feb. 20, 21, 22, and 23 for the winter recess. Please note that classes will resume on Monday, Feb. 26.

As the timetable for movement due to construction at the high school has now changed as outlined below.

With CAPT testing starting in early March, it has been decided that the closing of the modular classrooms and the transfer of the freshman class to the main building will be made after the completion of the CAPT testing.

The revised schedule calls for the Administration, Guidance and Health/Support Services to move to the new front addition over the weekend of Feb. 10 and Feb. 11. The new Main Entrance to the senior high school will be open to students, staff and visitors beginning on Monday, Feb. 12. This schedule will allow time for the current Main Office and Guidance wing to be remodeled and renovated.

March 19, is a district staff development day, and March 20 will be a teacher "move-in and set-up" day. There will be no school for students on March 19 and 20.

Classes will resume on Wednesday, March 21 when all staff will have moved to their new permanent locations in the unified Main Building.

February and March promise to be historic months for Amity High School, as renovations and additions to the high school rush to completion.

With change will come some temporary confusion and slight inconveniences, but there is no doubt that the end of construction will result in a better educational experience for all of our students.

Watch for the March issue of the Backpack for more news regarding the move to the newly renovated senior high school.
