Milford police nab sex offender wanted in New York

A man convicted of rape and murder about 20 years ago was apprehended in Milford Dec. 2 for extradition to New York for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to police, on Dec. 2, at approximately 1 p.m. officers took custody of Herbert Arnold, 72, of 308 Orchard St, Vestel, N.Y., on an active warrant for his arrest.

Arnold was wanted on a full extradition warrant by the Broome County, N.Y., Sheriff’s Office for failing to register as a sex offender.

In the early 1990s Arnold was convicted of the rape and murder of a 16-year-old victim, police said.

While reading a Connecticut Law Enforcement information sharing website, Milford officers learned that Arnold was believed to be in Connecticut and possibly staying in Milford. The website described Arnold’s vehicle, which was then located in Milford by an officer while on patrol.

Arnold was taken to Milford Superior Court on Monday, Dec. 5, for an extradition hearing to be brought back to New York.
