Milford police: ‘Backpage Bandit’ charged in second hotel robbery
MILFORD >> A Bridgeport man — dubbed the “Backpage Bandit” by police — is facing more charges in Milford after investigators say DNA evidence linked him to a hotel room holdup in May.
Jonathan Arzu, 23, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the alleged May robbery, police spokesman Officer Joseph Dempsey said Wednesday morning in a press release.
Dempsey said Arzu and two others forced their way into a room and pistol-whipped a woman inside. They allegedly ransacked the room and stole the woman’s purse, wallet and money.
Dempsey said investigators found DNA at the scene, though it was not immediately clear Wednesday what that evidence was. He also said the victim later identified Arzu as one of her attackers.
For the May incident, Arzu was charged with first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, third-degree larceny, reckless endangerment and conspiracy charges. He was arraigned in that case Tuesday.
State records show Arzu is being held in lieu of a total of $250,000 bail and is to appear Nov. 22 in Milford Superior Court.
Police have given Arzu his moniker because they say he used a website called “backpage.com” to find women offering services at area hotels. The website contains classified ads similar to Craigslist.
Arzu, who lives on Laurel Avenue in Bridgeport, was arrested in September in connection with a similar robbery that happened in July. In that case, police allege he and accomplices tied a woman up with a phone cord. DNA evidence was also reportedly found at that scene.
Arzu has not entered a plea on charges stemming from that incident. He is being represented by a public defender.
