Milford manufacturer lays off 25-plus workers
Bic is in the process of laying more than 25 workers at its Milford plant, with the Department of Labor signing off on career assistance that could include relocation stipends if individuals move to take new jobs.
The Orange office of the United Steelworkers at sought DOL assistance on behalf of the workers, according to a filing under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program that is invoked when companies lay off workers to move that work to lower-cost locations outside the United States.
The Bic workers, some of who are temporary workers, produce lighter refills, with the company producing more than a million lighters daily in Milford. In the second quarter, Bic lighter sales were down 11 percent globally to $191 million, with sales down also of stationery products and shavers.
Bic Consumer Products has its U.S. headquarters in Shelton and at last report employed 750 people in 21 states, with its parent company based in France.
