Kate Thompson knew about the tiara, but the engagement ring took her by surprise.

Kate was an honor attendant in last week’s New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade, meaning she was among the lineup of parade dignitaries, when her boyfriend, Dan Carr, popped the question.

Kate’s mother, Trish, said she knew about the proposal but had to keep it a secret for a week. The family was at a pre-parade ball the weekend before when Dan told his girlfriend’s mother that he planned to pop the question at the parade.

On parade day, about 25 family members were in the bleachers for the big event. Some of them knew about the proposal, some didn’t. Kate surely didn’t know.

Dressed in her parade finery, complete with sash and tiara, Kate moved along the parade route, waving to the crowd. When she got to the grand stand, she made her way to the bleachers to see her family and friends.

That’s when it happened.

“Her boyfriend Dan Carr from Milford crossed the street, knelt down and proposed, and the crowd went wild,” Kate’s mother said.

The bagpipers were behind them playing, and it was truly an Irish-themed proposal.

Kate lives in Shelton and Dan lives in Milford. Both of them work at Rainbow Gardens Restaurant in Milford. He is a chef, and she is a waitress there. Thompson also works as a CNA at Home Health Care Center, and is a student at Gateway Community College. She plans to be a nurse.

Dan and Kate are both 24 years old and plan to marry in two years.

Dan is the son of Craig and Liz Carr of Milford. Kate is the daughter of Bob and Trish Thompson of Shelton.
