Milford high school students receive Friends awards

MILFORD >> Students, teachers, principals, city officials, parents, family members and Friends of the Milford Library filled the library program room to honor the seven students who received the Friends 2016 Student Awards.

Margaret Bolger, chairwoman of the Friends of Milford Library Awards Committee, presented awards to:

• Fiona Noyes and Kelly Scianna, seniors at Joseph A. Foran and Jonathan Law high schools respectively, the first two winners of the Friends $500scholarships.

• Juniors who received the 2016 Book Awards: Julia Polizzo, The Academy; Annika Benedetti, Foran; Veronica Piscitelli, Lauralton Hall; Kavitha Mohanarajan, Jonathan Law High School; Lupita Barajos, Platt Regional Vocational Technical School.

Each was presented with “Only in Milford” by local author DeForest Smith.

Also, each was to select another book to be given to the school library, with a bookplate identifying the winner.

“We are so proud of these students who … have made a positive impact on their schools and community and have demonstrated strong, and consistent, love of reading,” said Superintendent of Schools Elizabeh Feser.

“I applaud the Friends of the Library for initiating this award program and for adding the scholarship winners this year.

“The library is such an important part of our community. We are grateful for the essential role it plays in the lives of our students and their families,” Feser said.

Anne Bolin, president of the Friends of the Milford Library, and Diana Preece, Young Adult librarian, offered their congratulations to the winners and their families.
