A family of four people and three dogs was forced from their home Wednesday after a fire broke out in their laundry room.

One of the dogs needed help getting out of the building.

“One firefighter was injured while rescuing the dog and was transported to Milford Hospital for evaluation and treatment,” said Milford Fire spokesman Anthony Fabrizi, in a press release.

The owner of the William Street home was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after she tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out herself, Fabrizi said.

The fire was contained to the laundry room, but smoke damage left the house uninhabitable.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

An American Red Cross representative met the family at the scene and is helping them, Fabrizi said.
