Milford couple honored as traffic safety heroes

AAA Northeast recently honored two Milford Police Department Citizens Police Academy Volunteer Alumni as Traffic Safety Heroes.

John and Barbara Carissimi were recognized for their outstanding efforts to serve as community ‘ambassadors’ for the Milford Police Department. As graduates of the department’s Citizens’ Police Academy, the husband-and-wife team has been instrumental in organizing academy alumni to serve as department ambassadors. Under the Carissimis’ direction, alumni – all Milford residents – help police staff community events, such the Milford Oyster Festival, Pumpkins on the Pier and Prescription Drop-Off Days. During these events, the group staffs traffic posts to ensure efficient traffic flow and assist pedestrians and motorists who need directions around event road closures.

“Their selflessness, commitment and organizational skills help Milford police in keeping pedestrians safe and the city traffic free of congestion during large-scale events,” said Chief Keith Mello in his nomination of the couple for the award.
