Meriden police see uptick in gunshots reported in city
MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — The number of reports of gunshots called in to the Meriden police department this year is the highest in the last decade, officials said.
So far in 2020 there have been 150 reports of gunfire, 85 of which have been confirmed, according to data provided by the department. That is the highest in the decade even though the year is not over.
Police Chief Roberto Rosado said at a City Council meeting this week that recent incidents of gun violence involve gang members from cities nearby including New Britain, New Haven and Waterbury, the Record-Journal reported.
“We know there is a lot of conflict in the community,” Rosado said during the virtual meeting. “Not only in this community, but with other communities ... We’re also working with them to curb some of the activity.”
Rosado said Meriden police are working with those other cities as well as state and federal agencies.
Mayor Kevin Scarpati said at the meeting that the city trusts in the police department.
