Local photographer trains to be Miss America judge

Catherine Fiehn of Milford recently completed the judges’ workshop for the Miss America Judging System and is now qualified to judge state and local Miss America Scholarship competitions.

Fiehn, who is owner of Catherine Fiehn Photography, has been volunteering with the organization for more than eight years as the official photographer to Miss Connecticut and provides the headshot for the program book at the Miss America Scholarship Competition which has been held in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood in recent years.

This year Miss America will air on ABC at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Miss America Organization is the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Over $45 million in scholarship assistance was made available this year through state and local organizations.

Fiehn is a professional photographer with more than 20 years experience. She has won International awards for her commercial portraiture and has been named “Creative Photographer of the Year” twice by the Connecticut Professional Photographer’s Association. She also has been awarded the prestigious Gemini Cup for creativity in photography. The studio was named to The Knot’s “Best of Weddings” list for 2008-2009.

She is often found among the ranks of photographers at Miss America and Miss USA in Las Vegas and Fashion Week in New York City and her images often grace the pages of publications such as Supermodel’s Unlimited, Fourpoints, and the Miss America Scholarship Organization’s and Miss USA program book. Her images have been recently featured on many television shows and networks such as Wicked Fit, Oxygen’s Hair Battle and Dr. Phil to name a few.

Fiehn graduated from Sacred Heart University with a bachelor’s degree in media studies/graphic design and is a professionally trained makeup artist. She is a former state gymnastics champion and a certified scuba diver.
