Local girl helps raise awareness about food allergies

The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, FAAN, will hold a Walk for Food Allergy, and Milford resident Elena Soviero is this year’s Youth Ambassador for the Connecticut walk
Elena is a fourth grader who suffers from food allergies and attends Meadowside Elementary School. Elena joined the Connecticut FAAN walk for the first time last year and is busy recruiting family and friends to join her team this year.

Elena made posters about food allergies to display at her school and showed a Power Point presentation on the top eight food allergies, signs and symptoms of a reaction, Epipens, and bullying.
To further spread the word on rising food allergies, she read “The Bugabees,” a picture book about food allergies, to her sister’s kindergarten class and gave them a handout from the FAAN website to take home.
The 2012 Walk for Food Allergy will taked place Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at the Milford Green. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with a two-mile walk beginning at noon. Event activities include musical entertainment donated by The Elwoods of Milford.
Eight foods account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions, according to a FAAN spokesperson: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g., walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans), wheat, soy, fish and shellfish.
