Kids Count fundraiser offers chance to win half-hour grocery shopping spree

This year there will be a number of auction items up for bid at the annual Harborlight Happening, but one takes the spotlight: A half hour ShopRite shopping spree and a chance to be the first customer at the new ShopRite.

“The most interesting auction item, by far, has been donated by Harry Garafalo,” Harborlight Happening organizers said in a press release.

Garafalo is the owner of ShopRite of Milford, and he owns ShopRites in Hamden, East Haven, West Haven and Stratford. He has donated a one half hour shopping spree, including $100 in ShopRite gift cards, to the highest bidder of his live auction item.

“This person will become the first shopper in the new ShopRite of Milford,” event organizers said.

The shopping spree will take place at the grand opening of the new ShopRite on the Boston Post Road in Milford at a date to be determined in June, 2016.

The annual Harborlight Happening benefits Kids Count of Milford. It will take place on Thursday, May 26, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Milford Yacht Club.

Kids Count has been helping parents send their children to preschool for more than 20 years. Through the John Peterson Memorial Preschool Scholarship fund, Kids Count has dedicated more than $560,000 to preschool scholarships since its inception.

Each year between $25,000 and $35,000 in scholarships are paid to Milford private preschools on behalf of three- and four-year-old children who would not otherwise attend preschool because of the high cost of attending private programs. Kids Count's mission is to ensure that all Milford children are prepared for kindergarten.

Other auction items at the Harborlight Happening include:

An early evening sail with dinner, Blake Shelton tickets, Yankee tickets, an American Girl Doll, an opportunity to learn to prepare and cook a Greek dinner, and the ever favorite Men Who Love to Cook.
