Heated tent approved for outdoor biergarten at Tribus

Tribus Beer Company, 100 Raton Drive, plans to install a heated tent over its 1,000-square-foot patio to make it comfortable for patrons to use the outdoor biergarten from November to April.

The Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously at its Jan. 15 meeting to amend the site plan approval of Dec. 19, 2017, to allow the seasonal use of the tent. The board attached the condition that Tribus post a $1,500 bond to insure that the brewery pave a parking space next to the dumpster enclosure, which is currently gravel.

Attorney Thomas Lynch said the brewery had to complete two items from the original site plan: installing a dumpster enclosure, and putting in a parking space next to that dumpster to comply with the site plan approval. Lynch said the paving cannot be completed until spring because asphalt plants are closed for the winter.

Lynch said the tent would be freestanding, and not attached to the building to comply with fire regulations. The tent will have a hard roof with plastic walls and an exterior propane heater.

Tribus opened on Aug. 11 as a brewery and taproom with an outdoor biergarten and visiting food trucks. The brewery and taproom operates in an 11,000-square-foot section of a 15,000-square-foot building on a 2.28-acre property in the Limited Industrial District.

“They have been doing fantastic down there,” said Lynch.

At its Nov. 20 meeting, the board approved a 60-seat taproom for Milford Point Brewing, 230 Woodmont Road, Unit 29B. That brewery opened April 7, and had a small taste and growler-filling room, and sold its products for off-site consumption and through some local stores.

At its June 19 meeting, the P&Z unanimously approved a brewpub and restaurant called Dockside Waterfront Biergarten and Brewery at 40 Bridgeport Avenue. This facility is expected to open in spring or summer.
