Get Healthy CT: Walk your way to wellness

Physical activity is one of the keys to good health, and walking is one of the best ways to remain active, according to Get Healthy CT, the regional wellness coalition of hospitals, health departments and other health and social service providers. In its monthly health feature, “Walking Your Way to Wellness,” available online at, the group offers tips and resources to help get the most out of walking, including:

According to the American Heart Association, walking can improve cholesterol, increase energy and stamina, boost bone strength and prevent weight gain. The Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

The packet also includes information about the Get Healthy Walk’n’Talk, a four-week walking series led by local health professionals at Bridgeport’s Seaside Park, Saturdays, April 30-May 21, 10-11:30 a.m. Call Jonathan James for more information at 203-576-7680.

In addition, a flyer about Get Fit and Healthy Kids Day is included. Co-sponsored by Get Healthy CT, YMCA and New Haven Parks and Recreation Department, this event takes place Saturday, April 30, from 11-3, on the New Haven Green. Get Healthy CT focuses on a different obesity prevention topic each month and provides resources in print and online. Printed information packets are also available in some area libraries, community centers, regional health departments, and other locations.
