The Milford Republican Party will honor Jim Amann and Win Smith Monday, March 25, at its annual Hall of Fame Dinner.

Despite belonging to different political parties — Amann is a Democrat and Smith is a Republican — these men were able to remain friends and work together for the good of Milford when they both served in the state legislature.

“The Town Committee believes that they are an example of what public service should be,” the GOP said in a prepared press release.

Amann served for 28 years in local and state government and was speaker of the House from January 2005 through January 2009.

He represented Milford’s 118th District.

Amann chaired the freshman caucus from 1991 through 1993 and served as House chair of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee from 1993 through 1998, when he sponsored landmark health care legislation.

Amann also held seats on the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committees from 1994 to 1999 and the Judiciary Committee from 1991 through 2002. Amann’s leadership posts include deputy House majority whip from 2001 through 2003 and House majority leader from 2003 to 2005.

Smith served as state senator from the 14th District, which includes Milford, Orange and West Haven, from 1992 until 2005.

During his six terms in the state Senate, he served in various leadership roles, including assistant majority leader, assistant minority leader, chairman of the Government Administration and Elections Committee (GAE), chairman of the Bill Screening Committee, member of the Finance Committee, and chair of the Bonding Subcommittee and ranking member of the Banking Committee.

After serving in the General Assembly, Smith served as Milford city attorney from January 2009 through November 2011. During that time he was appointed to the board of directors of the Connecticut Association of Municipal Attorneys and to the State Ethics Commission.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Costa Azzurra Restaurant, 72 Broadway.

Entertainment will be provided by Chris Jason, who will perform songs in the style of Frank Sinatra. At the event, the Republican Women will hold a cookie bake-off to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Milford.

The evening will also include stories about Ronald Reagan.
