'Friends' raise more than $14,000 for Milford Public Library

The Friends of Milford Library, a non-profit volunteer organization that sustains the programs and activities of the Milford Public Library that are not supported in the city budget, reported its results for 2014 and discussed plans recently for the new year.

“We can be proud of what we have accomplished in 2014,” said newly elected President Anne Bolin.

This year the Friends of Milford Library accomplished the following.

The group raised over $14,000, mostly through its book sales in the basement of the library.

It sponsored adult programs in the amount of over $5,000, funding lectures, concerts, movies, dance programs, workshops and classes such as monthly genealogy classes and the gardening series.

The Friends supported children's programs in the amount of over $7,000, including the creative writing club for pre-teens, story hours, summer reading clubs, drama workshops, and seasonal passes for families to enjoy Connecticut museums and zoos.

The group also set up Books for Commuters at the Milford Train Station.

The organization has a series of programs planned for the new year.

For example, Milford volunteer Liza Thornell-Gargiulo will chair the Little Libraries committee, which will design, construct and stock book kiosks at parks, bus stops and beaches.

Programs for teens are planned, including high school book awards for juniors with a demonstrated love for books and an oral history project that will pair teens with mentors to organize interviews with artists represented in the city's art collection.

There will be a Welcome to Milford program, in collaboration with Milford businesses and organizations, to create packets to introduce newcomers to the city.

“We are excited about our plans for the new year,” said Bolin, “and welcome all who would like to join us in making these interesting projects a reality.”
