John DeRosa, a member of the Milford Board of Education, has died, and residents and politicians are mourning the passing of a community leader.

“I will miss you my friend and brother, can't wait to be with you again in God's beautiful heaven,” wrote Paul Beckwith, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, in a Facebook posting.

DeRosa, 49, just recently won reelection to the Board of Education.

According to friends, he had been battling health issues for some time. Fellow Republicans recently held a fundraiser to help him and his family with medical-related bills.

DeRosa was a longtime resident, according to a political statement published in the Milford Mirror in October.

He worked more than 10 years as an associate professor at Quinnipiac University, and noted in his political statement, “I am a ‘teacher’ at heart.”

Milford alderman Raymond Vitali wrote on Facebook, “Great loss to the city of Milford and to the Board of Education.”

According to a friend’s online posting, DeRosa died Sunday morning at Hospice.

Cody-White Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Friends and family may call on Thursday, December 10, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street. Interment will be private.
