Firefighters could not say officially that the small bathroom fire at Foran High School Tuesday was started intentionally, but they did say that it started in a sink and was fed by trash and paper towels.

Smoke detectors and alarms worked properly in alerting the school to the fire, and students and staff evacuated in an orderly manner. The school was evacuated at about 12:22 p.m., and students and staff were let back inside at 12:52 p.m., said Fire Department Spokesman Greg Carman.

Carman credited school staff with directing firefighters to the third floor bathroom in what is referred to as the green hallway, where the fire occurred.

“It saved us having to look for the right bathroom,” Carman said.

The small fire was still burning when firefighters went in, but it was easily extinguished.

The only damage was to a soap dispenser, and there were no injuries.

The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, Carman said.
