DOT to explain plans for tunnel
WOODBRIDGE >> The state Department of Transportation will hold a meeting July 27 to inform residents about plans to improve the Heroes Tunnel on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in New Haven.
The hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 27 at the Woodbridge Senior Center, 4 Meetinghouse Lane.
The DOT has identified “structural and drainage deficiencies” in the 67-year-old tunnel, as well as electrical and mechanical work that needs to be done, according to a release. The project would cost about $200 million, the DOT has said, and be completed by 2019.
One plan involves drilling a third 1,200-foot barrel through West Rock. One of the original tunnels would then be renovated and the other would be used for emergencies, the DOT has said.
Widening or rehabilitation of the existing barrels are other alternatives.
