DMV services come to Milford credit union
The state Department of Motor Vehicles on Thursday unveiled a new way to avoid long wait times — an electronic kiosk and express center at a credit union in Milford.
The state-of-the-art DMV Express Center facility is the first in the state and one of more to come, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said.
“The service is an innovative step forward, giving customers a reliable option to renew driver’s licenses, while at the same time reducing the strain on DMV locations,” Malloy said.
After AAA Northeast announced in 2016 that it would no longer provide DMV services at its branch offices in New Haven and Fairfield County, the state started looking for other businesses that would be interested in hosting a DMV kiosk.
It issued a request for proposal and, as a result, the Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union on Boston Post Road will open Thursday.
Planning is under way to offer similar services at WorkPlace offices, state officials said..
Services provided at the credit union include verified driver’s license renewals [U.S. citizens only], regular license renewals, ID card renewals [U.S. citizens only], duplicate driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and name changes.
“We are excited about opening this Milford location to serve the Southern Connecticut area,” DMV Commissioner Michael Bzdyra said. “We believe this partnership will serve the citizens of Connecticut well by giving them additional places for license and ID card renewal services.”
Hours could be extended in the future, officials said.
State Department of Banking Commissioner Jorge Perez said adding DMV services to credit unions is good for all involved.
“Innovations like these not only help strengthen our credit unions in the state but allow them to grow and thrive,” Perez said. “Here, government and industry worked together, not only for the benefit of Nutmeg’s members, but all Connecticut residents.”
Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union President John Holt also praised the effort.
“Our intent is to offer convenience through technology whether you are doing your banking or renewing your license,” Hold said. “We have always been dedicated to providing outstanding service and convenience for our members and will offer that same commitment to the DMV experience.”
A convenience fee is charged for non-Nutmeg members to complete DMV transactions. Customers at the Milford location will also be given the opportunity to register to vote.
The Milford DMV Express Center will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon
