Cut-a-thon fund-raiser planned for Milford teen battling brain tumor

With funds nearing $82,000 for a local teenager with a brain tumor, a hair salon fundraiser is planned to help close the gap on $100,000 sought to help the family with medical bills.

Danielle Kemp, 19, of Milford, a Foran High School graduate and currently a Division 1 student-athlete at Stony Brook in Long Island, is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.

An avid softball player since childhood, Danni was playing softball for the Brakettes this summer when she got hit by a pitch in the helmet during an at-bat. After a few weeks she went to the doctor because she felt dizzy, and doctors initially thought it was a concussion. But after an MRI was ordered, they realized it was not a concussion.

“After being sent to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Danni and her family were informed that she has an inoperable brain tumor in the Pons region of her brain,” wrote Bradley Taylor on a gofundme page that aims to raise $100,000 to help with medical and related costs.

The family was told that due to the location of the tumor, surgery was not an option. Instead, the young Milford woman began radiation therapy at the end of August, and will receive treatment Monday through Friday, for a total of six weeks.

“The team of doctors at Yale is still working to come up with the best plan of care to continue with after the six weeks of radiation,” the site states.

The upcoming fundraiser, Haircuts and Manicures for a Cause, will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hair Forever, 374 New Haven Ave.

Sheri Brocar Malia said she will be cutting hair, as will her boss Nancy Campbell and stylist Patricia Varnum. Carolee Salthouse will be doing manicures.

The minimum donation will be $20, and in addition to haircuts and manicures, there will be music, food and drinks. Raffle tickets will be sold for an array of raffle items.

Malia knows Kemp well, as she used to cut her hair as well as her sister Alyssa’s before they went away to school. Kemp’s mother, Melinda, is one of Malia’s clients.

“[Danni] and her family are a staple of Milford, and everyone in Milford knows this awesome family,” Malia said.

Kemp is majoring in health sciences at Stony Brook, and according to a short bio on the school’s sports page, her favorite book is ‘The Places You’ll Go’ by Dr. Seuss, and her favorite hobby is riding a snowmobile.

Friends and family, as well as teachers at Foran High School, describe Kemp as a hard working dedicated young woman who is a master of her sport.

At Foran High School, faculty, staff and students have been wearing blue bracelets, which are being sold to raise money for the Kemp family. The bracelets are available at Hair Forever.

On Sunday, a posting on the site reported, “Update for Sunday, we are still planning on Danni coming home later today after she passes a few more milestones while in the hospital. Keep up those positive thoughts and prayers!”
