City kicks off 375th anniversary celebration

Milford kicked off its 375th anniversary celebration Monday night at the Board of Aldermen’s meeting with a town crier inviting residents and city officials to join in a year of celebratory activities.

David Gregory, dressed as a town crier, bellowed the news about the 375th, noting that a number of events will be planned, from musical to historical, educational and more.

On Feb. 12, members of the 375th Anniversary Committee will stage a re-enactment of the purchase of Milford, and all residents will be invited.

A series of events will take place June 9 to 15, “ending with a parade to be remembered,” Gregory said.

A time capsule will be buried this year, and residents will be welcome to suggest items to go into it, he added.

Dolores Hannon, a former school principal, brought her guitar to the meeting to lead the singing of the Milford song, written 25 years ago by enrichment students and their teacher at Central Grammar School. Students had been expected to join her, but their teacher told them to stay home because of the bitter cold temperatures coming in Monday night.

Robert Gregory, chairman of the anniversary committee, said the students will be invited to sing at one of the upcoming events.

Paige Miglio, Milford Fine Arts Council director, unveiled winning logo contest entries. The logos will be used on various merchandise throughout the year.

Joanne Zuckerman of JoZ Graphics created the winning design. She has lived in Milford for more than 25 years with her husband, Mike. She told logo contest organizers that driving home along Gulf Beach, watching the sun set and an evening regatta, she often thinks, “Wow … I live here.”

Her design features the Memorial tower, an oyster and a sailboat.

A secondary student design was also selected, and features artwork by Milford resident and Jonathan Law student Madisyn Rauscher. The design features an oyster shape with Captain Kidd overlooking Charles Island.

Details about events will be published as they become available.
