Braves edge Twins (Mustang baseball)
The Braves and Twins kicked off another exciting season in Junior Major League at the age 9-10 Mustang level over the weekend.
The two teams showcased some great young Milford players, including the starting pitchers Rune McCallum of the Braves and the Twins’ Jason Giambra, with the Braves winning a hard-fought 4-3 decision.
The Braves, sponsored by West River Healthcare, took a one-run lead on an RBI single by McCallum in the first inning that scored Chris Ricci.
However, the Twins, sponsored by Stanley Steamer, did not allow another hit as Giambra retired the next eight batters he faced with seven strikeouts.
McCallum was just as good from the mound, with eight strikeouts, and his defense helped with Chris Smith tagging out the potential tying run at the plate in the first inning.
The Braves scored two runs in the fourth inning with consecutive singles by Matt Fishman, McCallum and Andrew Janik (RBI).
Tim Samson knocked in the second run with a grounder.
The Twins put together an impressive rally in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs, led by a triple from Giambra and singles by Rich Carino and Briana Brassell to tie the game at 3.
The game went into extra innings, where the Braves’ Janik singled, followed by a solid single and RBI by Nick Manganiello, which ended up being the game-winner.
Jay Hilton added a single, but the Braves stranded runners on second and third.
In the bottom of the extra frame, the Twins loaded the bases with two outs against Janik.
On a 2-2 count, Janik forced a hard-hit grounder back to the mound, which he fielded and fired to first base to end the game.
The Milford Junior Major League season is well underway, developing some the best talent in Milford, Orange and Stratford, playing by MLB rules in the center of town behind the Milford Library.
