The Rams and Knights have played five times during the past two years, with New Canaan winning four times. Notre Dame’s one victory over New Canaan was a big one, however, as they scored a 2-0 shutout in the 2014 CIAC Division I state boys hockey quarterfinals.
Last year, New Canaan was 12-8-3, while Notre Dame was 9-10-2.
The Knights feature a deep offense, led by senior forwards Joe Andsaldo and Calvin Hoban.
On defense, Notre Dame stars seniors Doug Caliendo and Paddy Connors, along with senior goalie Conor Hylton.
New Canaan’s attack features junior forward Tyler Hill, George McMahon and Brooks Gammill, while the defense is led by junior Drew Morris and senior James Franzis.
The Rams also have a pair of junior goalies with experience: Liam Mooney and Peter Windas.
Staples-Weston-Shelton vs. Amity
The Staples-Weston-Shelton co-op had a regular-season record of 11-9 last winter, and split two games in the CIAC Division III state playoffs, beating Joel Barlow (Redding-Easton), 4-3, before losing to eventual champion E.O. Smith-Tolland, 5-0, in the quarterfinals.
They return plenty of veterans this year and could contend for the Division III title.
Staples’ standouts include seniors Jesse Greenspun and Ryan Johnson at forward, and senior Ian Offenberg on defense.
Amity struggled at 4-15-1 last year, but in 2013-14, the Spartans were 16-8 and finished as the runners-up in the Division II sate tournament. They lost to Daniel Hand, 5-4, in the final.
Amity is led by senior defensemen Anthony Uscilla and McGovern Deane, and senior forward Graham Hughes.
