Booters can learn from best

The College Prep Soccer Showcase for boys and girls ages 14-18 will be held starting July 23 and running through Aug. 13 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Foran High in Milford.

“For 21/2 hours each day a different college coach will put players through the paces to get them ready for the fall season,” said Camp Director Jim Leahy, current coach at Tolland High and former star goalie at Milford High and Brandeis University, where he was ISAA Goalkeeper of the Year.
“In all, the ten sessions will provide at least twenty-five hours of specific technical and tactical training.”
Rick DiStefano, a 35-year soccer veteran and current Foran High coach and former star goaltender at Platt Tech, said:
“We continue to sign up coaches for the camp. Last year, our roster of coaches included those from UConn, UMass, St. John’s, Bentley, UNH, Eastern, Southern Vermont, Newbury and Wesleyan University.
“Our goal is to identify a player’s strength and weaknesses as an athlete. We’ll test for strength, speed, power, agility, core strength, and endurance.
“We’ll also provide players with a specific training plan they can follow through the summer to get them in the best shape possible for the fall season.
“We’ll finish the camp with a second fitness evaluation to check on a player’s progress.”
A $100 non-refundable deposit will hold one of the 44 spaces available, with an additional $300 due by June 15.
