MILFORD >> The man who was swept off the Charles Island sandbar Friday has been identified as George Swaby, 28, of Bridgeport.

The Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a body at the sandbar at about 6 p.m. Sunday.

Police Officer Mike DeVito said the mother of the victim was called to identify the body, which was found by people who walked out to Charles Island.

The sandbar links the beach at Silver Sands State Park with the island.

On Friday, a receding tide pulled two men into Long Island Sound.

A boater reported that two men were in the water and in distress, police said. One man was picked up by a boater and survived.

Crews searched for Swaby Friday evening and Saturday morning, then on Saturday suspended the search.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi said the intensive search involved multiple fire, police, Coast Guard marine, airborne and dive units.

Fabrizi said visitors to Silver Sands State Park should not walk on the Charles Island sandbar.
