It was one of the coldest Leprechaun Leaps in the event’s history Saturday at Walnut Beach, and likely the most well attended.

Organizers said each year typically brings out about 80 people to jump into the water for the leap, which benefits the Literacy Center of Milford.

With new categories, such as a tailgating party category, the numbers appeared to be way up, said Tami Jackson, the center’s director.

People shivered at Walnut Beach for a short time before running into the water at 3 p.m. Snow fell from the sky, and the water temperature was 39.2 degrees.
