• Shannon Murphy, class of 2017 of Woodbridge, social work major, and Christopher Nunno, class of 2017 of Milford, social work major, were recently inducted into Eastern Connecticut State University chapter of Phi Alpha, the national social work honor society.

• Shaukat Kahn of Bethany was elected district governor of the International Association of Lions Clubs District 23A for 2017-18. He will assume his duties July 2, when he is sworn in at the International Lions Convention in Chicago.

• Becker College student Tess Negron of Milford was recognized with the Game Arts Award at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony.

• Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for the field of communication. Kerry McNamara, class of 2017 of Milford, was one of the inductees. McNamara’s major is communication.

• Ashley Franklin, class of 2018 of Milford, spoke on “Issues and Challenges with Palliative Care in Connecticut” at the annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University on April 21. Franklin majors in health sciences.

• Sarah Warner, class of 2020 of Bethany, sang in the Eastern Concert Chorale at Eastern Connecticut State University alongside the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra in April for the annual spring concert in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. Warner majors in pre-early childhood education and music.

• Stevenson University biology major Kyra Blacketter of Milford, was inducted into the 2017 class of Who’s Who Among Students for the 2016-2017 school year.

• Coastal Carolina University held commencement ceremonies May 5,6. Candidates for graduation included: Patrick Boyle of Milford, Bachelor of Science in recreation and sport management; Samuel Geier of Milford, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in management.

• Francesca Ferrante of Bethany, class of 2018, won the Italian Department Prize, for excellence in the study of Italian at Connecticut College.

Nicole Simon of Woodbridge was initiated at University of Delaware.

• Outstanding Student Achievement awards were recently presented at Connecticut College to: Bethany, Francesca Ferrante, 2018, Italian Department Prize, for excellence in the study of Italian; Milford, Kathryn Alderman, 2017, Professor Gerda Taranow Prize, for the best work by an English major in an advanced or intermediate Shakespeare course; Tyler Clark, 2019, Sophomore Julia Wells Bower Prize, for distinction in mathematics.

• Robert Zielinski, class of 2017 of Bethany, who majors in mathematics at Eastern Connecticut State University, was inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon, the national honor society for the field of mathematics, at the end of the 2016-17 academic year.

• Spanish teacher Katherine Nunez of Milford was honored at a Sacred Heart Academy awards ceremony in which Summa Scholars were recognized for their superior academic performance, and each student, all seniors, honored the teacher they considered most influential to their success.

• Brianna Kee of Milford graduated from York College of Pennsylvania on May 13. Kee earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.

• Nishaan Patel, of Orange, was honored as one of the brightest young students in the world at a recent awards ceremony sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Nishaan, a participant in the CTY Talent Search, was recognized for scoring exceptionally high on a rigorous, above-grade-level test.
