Artist needed for downtown mural
With one new mural gracing the side of the Bridge House Restaurant in Devon, organizers of a city mural initiative are taking steps to create another mural, in the downtown area. The Milford Fine Arts Council recently sent out a second request for design proposals for a mural on the side of the Ship's Store at Milford Boat Works, which is located at 2 High Street.
The mural initiative was launched last year when a group of business people and artists got together and talked about creating a South Norwalk-type mural project in Milford, eventually leading to the creation of some 35 artistic murals on the outside of buildings around the city.
The idea actually began several years ago in the form of a "hidden mural" project under the auspices of the Milford Fine Arts Council, initiated by artist Suzanne Urban.
There are about nine murals hidden around Milford, including a whale painted on the side of a Bayview Beach area house, plus seascapes and mermaids in other spots.
Paige Miglio, another local artist, brought the concept back to life when she said she wanted to see a collection of murals to highlight Milford gateways and businesses.
"When people enter from the water, train or car they would be greeted by a mural," Miglio said at that initial meeting last year.
Chris Saley, owner of the Bridge House Restaurant in Devon, offered the side of his building for one of the first murals. Fine Arts director Bill Meddick and Miglio then painted the Washington Bridge on the side of the restaurant.
The Bridge House Restaurant is a short distance beyond the Washington Bridge, which connects Milford to Stratford.
Milford Boat Works is located at the head of the harbor.
The mural project would have both its east and north walls painted with a mural.
Artists are asked to submit their ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org or mail them to Milford Fine Arts Council, 40 Railroad Avenue, Milford CT 06460.
The chosen artist will be paid $2,000. The entry deadline is Aug. 15, and the artist will be chosen Aug. 30. The mural must be completed by Oct. 30.
