BETHANY - The board of selectman recently made new appointments to the building department and the school building committee.

Thomas Colwell was named building official. He had been serving as the acting building official, following the resignation of Michael Corbett last summer. Prior to that he was assistant building inspector.

The board also named Edward Palma to fill the vacant position of assistant building inspector.

Palma owns a construction company specializing in alterations, renovations and historic restoration. A Branford resident, he formerly lived in Orange.

The selectmen accepted with regret the resignation of Richard VanHorn from the school building committee, of which he was chairman for more than five years.

"He helped save the town a tremendous amount of money," First Selectman Craig Stahl said.

Brad Cohen was appointed to fill the vacant post on the panel. Stahl said he named Sal Amadeo, a committee member, as chairman, succeeding VanHorn. Amadeo is a member of the board of education.
