Amity Middle School Bethany math students compete

BETHANY >> Amity Middle School Bethany students in grades 7 and 8 recently competed in the New England Math League Contest against students from all six states.

Contest questions cover mathematical knowledge for each grade level. Questions on the contests never require any math beyond the grade level tested. The goal is to encourage student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving worthwhile problems.

The top students for Grade 7: first place, Arnav Paliwal; second place, Josh Feuerstein, Hannah Skiba; third place, Claire Yuan, Weiss Yuan, Kevin Lu.

The top students for Grade 8: first place, Sienna Wang, Sophia Wang, Hailey Pryor; second place, Abyan Nawaz, Alexander Pocwierz.

For the overall contest:

• The seventh-grade team placed fourth out of 32 schools and first in New Haven/Fairfield County.

• The eighth-grade team placed 26th out of 31 schools and third in New Haven/Fairfield County.

• Arnav Paliwal placed sixth in the overall contest after a five-way tie for first place. He also tied for first place in Connecticut. Based on his score, he qualifies for the NEML Summer International Math Tournament.
