I hope by the time you read this the temperature has finally gotten above freezing. Being an optimist, I'd like to believe that we have survived Old Man Winter's best punch, and now we can turn our thoughts toward February and the hopes of an early thaw.

COL: AMITY JUNIOR HIGH BACKPACK

First let's take a look at dates and events that apply.

To both of the junior high schools.

Please return the conference form to your school to schedule your conference times.

Three free "Parenting Seminars" are scheduled for the Spring with the first seminar being held on March 5.

The first seminar will feature facts regarding alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention for adolescents. It will be held at the junior high in Orange, and Dawn Roy, LCSW Student Assistance Counselor at the Amity Junior High in Orange will be the facilitator.

Space is limited and you must register by Feb. 28, by calling Dawn Roy at 878-6365, ext. 406. Future seminars on the subject of parenting an adolescent child will be held on April 10 and May 6. More information regarding these seminars will be posted in future articles. Remember that all seminars are free.

Next ,we have the announcements for the Orange Jr. High School.

A Winter Dance will be held Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the junior high. Admission is $3. The dance is sponsored by the Student Council. Parent volunteers are needed to assist in the kitchen, and contribution of baked goods would be greatly appreciated. For information, call Sue D'Orso at 874-1739 or Ellen Green at 799-2895.

ShopRite supermarkets will help us win points to purchase school supplies. If you have a ShopRite Price Plus card, you can go to the store's Courtesy Desk and inform them that you wish to apply earned points, based on your purchase amounts, to the Amity Junior High.. With accumulated points, Amity will be able to receive school supplies and equipment from the Shop Rite supermarket chain.

This promotion is for a limited time through March 29. We are competing for these free supplies and equipment with other school systems in Connecticut, so please make every effort to sign up now at your local ShopRite supermarket. If you don't have a ShopRite Price Plus card, you can get one at the store or online. To get your card online and to register to participate in this program, you can go to http://www.Shoprite.com/educate on the web. ShopRite stores are located in Derby, Milford and West Haven. For more information call Margaret Siena at 795-1130.

The PTSO meeting for the Orange Junior High will be held on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Library. Please make every effort to attend.

As for the Bethany Junior High, please be advised that the PTO meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m. at the school. Hopefully, we have more Bethany junior high news next month, as we will be pleased to post all articles that are submitted.

For all parents of students attending the junior high schools, please be advised that the next Amity budget referendum will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Please make every effort to get to your local polling place to vote.

Continued low voter turnout is not fair to our children, no matter which way you intend to vote. Not voting at all, sets a bad example for our children, who are learning every day in school about our Country's history and our democratic form of government.

That's all of the news for February. Watch for March's schedule in the last issue of The Bulletin for February. Please have a happy Valentine's Day and a safe vacation.

Editor's note. Karen Arnold is a resident of Orange.
