UPDATE: Silver Sands beach is open for swimming today, Thursday. All Milford beaches are open as well.

Silver Sands State Park beach was closed to swimming Wednesday, due to high bacteria counts.

The beach was also closed to swimming Tuesday.

“Indicator bacteria are not disease causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate potential for contamination of waterbodies,” according to the state DEEP website.

Milford beaches — Gulf, Walnut and the others — have been open for swimming, even when the state closed Silver Sands to swimmers. Mayor Ben Blake said he's a little confused about the state testing because he said Milford tests its beaches and there have been no problems with the bacteria levels.

Milford Heath Department Director Deepa Joseph confirmed that, saying that the city tests the beach water and all samples have come back fine, "without elevated bacteria levels."
