Retired Milford police officer Joe DellaMonica Jr. had himself quite an adventure this past weekend, jumping out of his car to rescue a man from a burning SUV moments before it exploded.

According to media reports, DellaMonica was traveling with his family on New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway on Saturday when he came upon the burning vehicle.

Reports suggest that DellaMonica exited his vehicle near the burning Nissan Murano and used his fists to punch out both the front and rear windows.

With the help of an off-duty New York police officer, DellaMonica helped carry John Gordnick, a 55- year old New Jersey man, to safety.

DellaMonica demonstrated real heroism and calm determination in executing the rescue of a man at risk of burning alive.

Without DellaMonica putting his own life at risk, Gordnick would probably not be recovering from his ‘non-life threatening’ injuries today.

We need more people like Joe DellaMonica Jr. in the world and we, in Milford, are very fortunate to have him as one of our own.
