A nation's eyes turn to Darien vs. New Canaan
The undefeated New Canaan and Darien boys lacrosse teams are on a collision course this Saturday, April 30, and you can catch all the action live in streaming HD from the HAN Network.
Live coverage starts at 11:30 a.m. with a pregame show featuring interviews with players and coaches from both teams. The two rivals take the field at 1 p.m. The game and pregame show can be seen live on HAN.network and its affiliate websites.
The longtime rivals have named the day “Unite for the Fight,” as part of the Darien lacrosse team’s drive to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis. A member of the Blue Wave roster has lived with cystic fibrosis his entire life.
As a show of support, every member of the boys lacrosse programs at DHS and NCHS will wear “Unite for the Fight Against CF” T-shirts to school on Friday, April 29.
Proceeds from the T-shirt sales, bakes sales, and concession stand, as well as donations, are being given to the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which raises money and awareness for the CF community.
The two rivals not only feature perfect records, they’ve done their damage against some top-flight competition and national rankings. The USA Today Sports Super 25 Expert Rankings put the Rams at No. 3 and Darien at No. 13.
The border towns in Fairfield County are rivals in everything from football to education to scoreboard size to lacrosse.
New Canaan started the season with a trip to Maryland, where it defeated the Loyola-Blakefield Dons 9-8 in overtime. The Rams also have wins over Fairfield Prep 8-7 (click here to watch), Wilton 11-2, and the Brunswick Bruins 13-8.
Darien (8-0), the defending FCIAC and CIAC Class L champion, also opened the year with a huge regional win on the road, rolling over Yorktown, N.Y., 12-3. The Wave has also beaten Niskayuna, N.Y., 20-16, Manhasset, N.Y., 11-8, and Wilton 17-3. You can watch the Manhasset game, covered by HAN, here.
The Wave is beginning a tough four-game stretch which features Staples, St. Anthony’s, N.Y., and Ridgefield.
New Canaan’s schedule eases a bit following the Darien contest, but the Rams will close the regular season with back-to-back home games against St. Anthony’s on May 14 and Ridgefield on May 17.
