76-year-old man suffers minor burns in boat fire

Friday, shortly after noon, local firefighters responded to a fire aboard a 25-foot sailboat.

A full compliment of fire apparatus was dispatched including the Marine 1 fire boat and the Coast Guard from New Haven. First arriving units found the boat at the mouth of Milford harbor, fully involved with fire. The sole occupant of the boat was picked up by a privately owned vessel.

The victim was brought to the Milford Yacht Club docks, where medical personnel assessed an approximately 76-year-old man for superficial burns to the face. Fire officials initially said the man was 86, but later said that was an error. The man was then transported to Bridgeport Hospital for further examination.

The fire was extinguished by Milford's Marine 1 and towed to the Milford Yacht Club dock. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal's office and still unknown at this time.
