NORWALK — Fourteen more staff members are leaving Norwalk Public Schools for the 2020-2021 school year.

In its first meeting since students and staff returned to school, the Board of Education had seven resignations, four extended leaves of absence through June and three retirements that will begin mid-year listed in their packet for approval. Another three teachers are requesting leaves of absence through November. Two more are requesting retirement for the end of June.

Last year around this time, there were four resignations for personal reasons and seven retirements, all but one which were slated for the end of that school year. There were no motions for special extended leaves of absence.

At its last regular meeting in August, the board approved 13 resignations, five retirements and four leaves of absence. Norwalk Federation of Teachers President Mary Yordon said this was before teachers found out they would not be offered remote teaching assignments. Yordon predicted more teachers would resign after finding out this news in late August.

At a BOE workshop earlier this month, Chief Talent Officer Javier Padilla said nine staff members applied for extended/special leaves of absence and 21 applied for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. Eighty-two staff members applied for reasonable accomodations. Padilla said the bulk of these were requests for remote teaching assignments which the district was, for the most part, unable to offer.

Padilla was not available for comment on how many staff left after their accomodations could not be met or how many applications were granted.

The board is also scheduled to approve 20 staff appointments, most of whom are teachers. Last year at this time, they had 14 appointments for approval.

At the start of the school year, the district’s website showed 77 job openings. As of this week, there are about 60 openings to be filled across the district.

This story was updated to reflect changes made to the Board of Education packet on Tuesday.
