BRIDGEPORT — St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound will host its 25th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit on Thursday. And, like so many events in the area of COVID-19, the fundraiser will be virtual.

Dr. Richard Zelkowitz, the new Regional Medical Director of the Breast Program for the Fairfield Region, will be the guest speaker at the event, which will begin at 7 p.m.

Zelkowitz previously worked at Norwalk Hospital, where he joined the medical staff in 1989. Zelkowitz initiated the state’s first breast navigator program to help guide patients and families through their cancer journeys. He began and developed a lecture series that attracted nationally recognized speakers, developed a multidisciplinary breast cancer tumor board and launched the state’s first Cold Cap program to prevent alopecia in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

A new “Pinking of You” Auction will also be open for bidding one week before the breast cancer fundraiser. The auction will include baskets donated in memory or honor of individuals and filled with items that reflect the individual’s personality.

All donations raised from the virtual benefit will be used to fund programs to increase access to mammography and prevention services for women at risk in the community. The SWIM also provides wigs, prostheses, medical assistance, free transportation to treatments and appointments, daycare scholarships and support groups and services.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women, with one out of eight women facing breast cancer over the course of her life.
